There are now very small spurts of kings coming through. Flows in the Oak are high, close to blown and dirty. A spate of water there too might drop back fish to downstream spots where guys are drifting and also bring on the last of the fresh run fish. No consistent cool down or big freshets yet so the action has been on and off. After several days of strong west winds both charter and Rec boats got back out. Total snow cover in the immediate area may only be 6 inches give or take, but the snow is wind swept bare in spots or drifted in feet otherwise. Flows are moderate to medium and slightly stained at least where you might be able to find a slot with open flows to drift. So, we moved out to 250-300 FOW and things got better. A fair amount of weeds are being discharged, especially noticeable in downstream areas. Water temps have remained downright cool late into this season despite up and down flows. No significant icing on any waterway. When flows are reduced temporarily, it reveals pretty good numbers of fish. Otherwise its a little tough to report on average fishing conditions. Stay tuned and keep tabs on the weather and water flows and get out there when you can. Its all about water flows Water flows are the single biggest factor in encouraging upstream movements of fish during the fall, winter and spring trib seasons. For now temps are in the high 30s F and falling short of the predicted near 50 F. Look for all the trib flows to be on the rise and going off color. With any luck well get some measurable liquid precip to help flows out. Both inshore structure, mid water and offshore has a mixed bag catch available. All the water, at least in the fishable mile or so stretch below the dam on the Oak, is open and ice free. Early Mar 2022 starting from last fall, thru the winter (weather permitting) and lasting until May! Not surprising since it was a real gloomy overcast wet kind of day that you would expect good fish movement. No lunch will be offered and no fly fishing tourney will be held. Anglers often find flows still a bit high and a bit stained and for sure cold but thats the nature of steelheading and the chance for a multiple hook up day. Then, with 10 days of flat water, along with the number of tournaments & derbies held and the pressure of a lot of fishing boats within a 10 mile x 1 mile stretch, the fish diminished their desire to bite. Upstream swamp headwater supplies seem brim full so look for flows to be pretty well maintained and on a continued slow clearing.
